Navigating Medicinal Cannabis Availability in the UK: A Complete Handbook

After a change in law made by the UK government in 2018, it is now possible to prescribe cannabis for non-licensed use. Doctors registered with the General Medical Council and who are specialists in certain medical conditions now have the authority to prescribe Cannabis Based Medicinal Products.

General practitioners cannot prescribe CBMPs at this time. However, they can refer their patients to private specialists if it’s in their best interest.

The Home Office has mandated that specialist doctors must follow specific criteria set by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence.

NICE does not allow specialist doctors in the National Health Service to prescribe cannabis products, unless a patient’s medical condition is extremely severe.
