In the past, mental health was not a topic we discussed. We tend to hide it under resentment or fake smiles. Mental health will be taken very seriously in 2023 and for good reason. Male suicide remains the leading cause of death, and negative thoughts do not only affect younger people. Mental health issues can affect older people as well, and they are often ignored.
It’s important to know the best ways to maintain good mental health as we age.
1. Open and honest
You need to know how to communicate with people. Do not let your emotions fester. Let someone know if you’re feeling lonely and unhappy, whether it is your children, friends, or staff at the retirement community. In the 20 th century, suffering in silence was seen as resilient and strong. Now it is seen as a sign of an old age we are better off without.
2. Keep active
Exercise will not only help you maintain a healthy heart and joints, but also release endorphins which are beneficial to your mental health. Consider putting together an annual golf trip with friends so you can indulge in your favorite hobby while giving yourself and others a reason for exercise. Golf might not be a high-energy sport like football, but it has many health benefits. It can also give your mental health an extra boost.
3. Nature is a great place to spend time.
Nature offers many therapeutic benefits to those who are experiencing mental health issues related to age. You can go for walks regularly in the countryside, or even your local park. Nature offers you peace and tranquility that modern life can’t.
4. Practice mindfulness
The practice of mindfulness is being present and aware in every moment, without judgement. It is a great tool for managing stress, anxiety, and depression. Meditation, deep breathing exercises and yoga are all ways to practice mindfulness.
5. Keep a social circle
No matter what age they are, humans are social animals. No matter how little you want to leave your house, stay socially engaged with friends and family. Participate in social groups. Host friends for regular nights out or nights in. Keep in touch via social media. Facebook is an excellent tool to keep in touch with loved ones.
6. Take care of your physical health
You should not fall into bad habits as you age. Our bodies will start to fail us and we’ll need every bit of help. You should aim to get around 7-9 hours of sleep each night, and shower every morning in order to maintain your hygiene.
It is important to maintain a healthy eating pattern. If you find it difficult to cook, consider investing in a service that will deliver fresh ingredients right to your front door.
7. Find hobbies that you enjoy.
It is important to keep your interest in things that you like and bring joy into your daily life. It could be reading, gardening, or playing an instrumental – whatever you choose, set aside some time each day for fun.
8. Engage with the younger generation
It may seem counterintuitive, but connecting with young people can have a hugely positive impact on your mental health. You’ll gain new perspectives, and experience that may allow you to appreciate the progress we’ve made in technology, knowledge and thinking.
9. If you need professional assistance, seek it out.
It’s okay to ask for help when you are dealing with mental issues. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, whether it is by visiting your doctor, joining a group or seeking therapy. Mental health is as important as physical and should be treated as such.
You are never too young to take charge of your mental wellbeing and health. You can have a healthy and long life, with improved mental wellbeing. Don’t forget that you should check in on yourself periodically and actively look for ways to improve your mental well-being. Good luck!
